Sciatica isn’t just annoying; it can keep you from doing the things you love and even make simple tasks difficult to complete. Fortunately, chiropractic treatment for sciatica is an effective way to relieve your symptoms and get back on track with life again.

Chiropractors use gentle adjustments of the spine to help reduce pressure on your nerves so they don’t become irritated and inflamed anymore. This helps give them room to heal so they can function properly again without causing pain or discomfort every time you move around too much. It takes only a few treatments before most people start feeling better than ever.

What Does Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica Involve?

Chiropractic treatment for sciatica involves the careful manipulation of joints in your low back or pelvic area to improve range of motion, function and reduce inflammation.

Chiropractors actually use a variety of treatment methods to address sciatic nerve impingement and pain such as:

Ice/Cold Therapy

This kind of therapy reduces inflammation.  Cold therapy helps to narrow the blood vessels in the area, reducing the amount of fluid buildup.

Ultrasound

Using gentle sound waves, ultrasound soothes pain by increasing circulation and reducing spasms in muscles.

Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser therapy (also called cold laser therapy) helps to reduce inflammation, reduces pain and stimulates the healing of cells.  Low level laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate through the skin and deep into the tissue.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy

Spinal manipulative therapy is a technique used by chiropractors in which they use their hands or device to apply controlled thrusts of specific degrees and directions on the joints of your spine. It differs from spinal mobilization which can be done within one’s natural range of motion without movement by using force.

This is the most important part of chiropractic care, this process frees the spine to move properly and restores proper alignment to the spine.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

This therapy can also be an excellent treatment to help reduce sciatica caused by a herniated disc.

The term “decompression” from a medical standpoint.

In most cases, decompression is achieved by spinal traction and not through surgery or other invasive procedures like injections. Spinal traction refers specifically to applying force on one’s spine using your hands (or with mechanical assistance). The goal here is to reduce pressure buildup within discs which can lead to nerve irritation and pain.

At-home stretches and exercises

At-home stretches and exercises can help keep your body flexible, relieve pressure in the lower leg and sciatic nerve region of your spine. It relieves pressure within the body that may lead to sciatica pain due to tightness or inflammation of a muscle deep within our hips. You can prevent this by stretching these muscles on both sides before engaging them in activities that require heavy use of these muscles, such as yoga.

Chiropractic maintenance

A visit to your chiropractor over a period of time can help prevent any spinal issues from arising. Think about going in for one check-up and making sure that everything is working as it should be, just like visiting an actual doctor would do.
